While environmental organizations are calling for a ban on salmon farming in protected areas, senators argue that this would have a major impact on the economy.

Salmon Chile strongly criticized the government's indication to the law being discussed in Congress, which would create the National Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service.

Iván Moreira, senator of the Independent Democratic Union, said that the solution is not to prohibit, but to control.

Carlos Kuschel, a member of the National Renewal parliament, said that the technologies allow for sustainable operations in the fishing industry.

Likewise, the socialist senator, Fidel Espinoza, said that although a ban is not feasible now, it could be implemented in the future.

In turn, the president of Salmón Chile, Arturo Clément, harshly criticized the government's decision, because they argued that the Ministry of Economy, the ministry that leads aquaculture, was not present in the discussion.

On the contrary, several regional organizations requested that no new concessions be granted in protected areas, regardless of the category. They also requested that all pending applications be rejected.

Finally, if any company installed in these areas fails to comply with the legislation, invoking a cause of forfeiture, they are required to be removed from the protected areas without the possibility of relocation.

This petition was signed by the organizations Terram, Rewilding Chile, Mission Blue and Defend Chiloé, among others.
