President Gabriel Boric, during his visit to the Magallanes Region, participated in the presentation of the National Regional Development Fund. In this context, the President said that salmon companies "must leave the protected areas".
"We want to say very clearly to the different industries that coexistence here has to be in terms of respect for the community and the environment, and that implies, although it is hard to say, that industries such as salmon farming have to leave protected areas," said the head of state.
"From our government we have to seek that sensitive and difficult balance of how to reconcile the employment provided by these companies with the externalities they cause," he added.
Regarding protected areas, he pointed out that "there are limits that cannot be crossed".
"No more concessions can be granted as long as there are no studies of the carrying capacity of the sea floor, autonomous of the salmon farms, and that there is a state supervisory capacity," he added.
